When Vaginal Dryness Occurs

Dr. Jennifer Berman

When a woman’s body is functioning normally and healthily (especially when it comes to sexual health) the vaginal walls will stay comfortably lubricated. Healthy vaginal walls are usually characterized by having a thin layer of clear fluid.

Estrogen is what helps maintain this lubricating fluid which ends up keeping the lining of the vagina healthy, thick, and marked by elasticity. It’s no secret that the female body strikes an intricate balance, which means that problems and imbalances can occur.

Vaginal dryness can occur when there is a drop in your estrogen levels. This will end up reducing moisture in your vaginal area. This can happen at any time in your life and it can happen to you for a variety of reasons.

Although vaginal dryness might initially seem like a minor hurdle or setback, lack of vaginal moisture can (and will) have a large impact on your sexual life. You do not have to accept vaginal dryness when it occurs, because there are several treatments that can relieve any sort of vaginal dryness you may be experiencing.

Hello! I’m Dr. Jennifer Berman and I’ve been a fixture in the women’s sexual health sector, appearing on and co-hosting popular TV shows, like The Doctors, Dr. Phil, Good Morning America, and more. I focus on non-hormonal treatment for vaginal dryness, natural treatments that help patients take back control of their sexual health.

Causes of Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness can result from a number of causes, including the onset of menopause. As a matter of fact, close to 1 in 3 will experience vaginal dryness during the menopausal transition. Menopause will also cause the vagina to become thinner and have less elasticity, which is also referred to as vaginal atrophy.

Your estrogen levels can drop for a number reasons, too, which, as discussed above, can result in vaginal dryness.

Childbirth and breastfeeding, for instance, might be causing your vaginal dryness. Treatment for cancer (radiation or chemotherapy) can also drop estrogen levels, not to mention surgery (removal of ovaries), as well as medication (anti-estrogen meds which treat endometriosis or uterine fibroids).

I focus on my patients inside and out. I’ll create your own personalized, tailor-made treatment plans for you that might include mind-body approaches (like cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and stress reduction techniques), weight loss techniques, or even simple changes in nutrition.

There are a number of all-natural treatments I can provide to help you treat and relieve your vaginal dryness and take control of your sexual health once again. Contact me today to schedule your initial consultation.
