Berberine +
Glucose, lipids, and gut motility — the small molecule frequently called nature's metformin.
What it does.
Berberine is a small alkaloid extracted from the goldenseal and barberry families. The literature on glucose handling, lipid profiles, and gut motility is robust enough that the molecule is sometimes called nature's metformin — which is overstated, but in the right ballpark.
I prescribe it most often for patients with insulin resistance, PCOS, mild dyslipidemia, or stubborn weight that is not responding to dietary work alone. Paired with milk thistle to support the liver clearance pathway berberine relies on.
Two capsules, twice daily, with the largest two meals. It is not a stimulant. It is a metabolic adjunct, and it works when the rest of the lifestyle work is also being done.
