Jennifer Berman MD is proud to offer the revolutionary body contouring technology EMSculpt. Dr. Berman is the best EmSculpt doctor and expert in Los Angeles. This non-invasive procedure simultaneously breaks down fat cells and strengthens muscles in the abdomen and buttocks.
Non-Invasive Body Sculpting
Let’s be real, when it comes to having the “ideal body”, achieving that goal is much easier said than done. Women today are devoted to the pursuit of a flatter, firmer belly and more prominent, curvy backside, but often find it challenging to meet these aesthetic goals without undergoing cosmetic surgery. Despite eating healthy and spending hours on the treadmill, many women, especially during peri-menopause and menopause, discover that their bodies just aren’t responding like they used to. While everyone knows the key to getting rid of unwanted fat and building muscle entails cutting calories, eating healthy and exercising, but what do you do when you are doing all the right things and still not seeing the results you want?
Non-surgical body contouring is a cutting edge, minimally invasive technology with no downtime. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), non-surgical body contouring treatments have seen a 50.4 percent increase in popularity over the last few years. Today, there are over a dozen new technologies on the market, however, not all these devices actually work to build lasting muscle tone and definition. I have personally evaluated all of the modalities on the market and picked the ones I believe are most effective and offer lasting results.
What is EMSculpt?
Emsculpt is a nonsurgical body sculpting treatment designed to strengthen muscles and melt fat by simulating intense muscle contractions that go above and beyond what can be achieved in any workout session. In a series of four 30 minute treatments, spaced over a period of two weeks, my patients achieve results far beyond what they were able to reach sweating it out at the gym doing rep after rep and set after set. For women seeking firmer abs and/or a tighter, perkier backside, Emsculpt, in my opinion, is a great option to consider.
Why Women Struggle to Lose Weight
No one is immune to weight gain, and as we age, it’s harder to maintain that healthy weight. Even though both men and women face this struggle, recent research suggests that women may lose weight differently than men. While our genetics, daily caloric intake, the foods we eat and our activity level all play a role in metabolism, women face additional factors that prevent them from losing weight. Some of these include:
- Muscle Mass – Generally speaking, women tend to be smaller in size than men and have less muscle and more fat. As a result, men typically lose weight faster while eating more calories daily than women. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so men are usually able to burn more calories at rest than women. Emscupt builds lean muscle mass while toning your body and increases the number of calories you burn at rest.
- Menstrual Cycles – While your menstrual cycle itself doesn’t contribute to weight loss or gain, it can affect your weight in other ways. You may already be all too aware that premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can cause you to crave and eat more sugar or salty foods than you usually do, which can lead to weight gain. Salty foods also cause the body to retain more water, which can raise the number you see on the scale.
- Menopause – It can definitely be challenging to maintain and/or lose weight during menopause; most women will gain an average of five to ten pounds and fat tends to build up in the abdominal region. As we age, our metabolism begins to slow down due to a decline in ovarian hormones.
As you can see from the list, some of these factors you have some control over — others you do not. Perhaps it is not entirely your fault that you’ve put on some additional weight, and perhaps there are some areas you could improve. At the same time, even if you are able to control the weight you lose through a healthy diet and active lifestyle, you can’t always control where that weight comes off. Common trouble spots such as the midsection or backside don’t always receive the full benefits of your efforts. The good news is EMSCULPT picks up where your workouts left off to help you shape and tone the areas that trouble you the most.
What is EMSculpt?
EMSCULPT is a noninvasive body contouring treatment created by BTL, a world-renowned manufacturer of medical devices. Unlike other noninvasive body contouring treatments that focus exclusively on reducing unwanted fat, EMSCULPT builds muscle in those hard-to-tone areas to take your results to the next level. The proprietary technology utilized by EMSCULPT eliminates the need for uncomfortable heat-inducing treatments such as lasers, radiofrequency or ultrasound energy to break up fat cells. Instead, EMSCULPT works with the natural processes of your body to simulate an intense workout, just at a much faster and more intense rate than you could ever achieve manually at the gym.
The “EM” in EMSCULPT stands for “electromagnetic”; the secret behind the device’s success. More specifically, EMSCULPT uses revolutionary high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy similar to that used in an MRI machine to produce supramaximal muscle contractions in the targeted abdominal or gluteal muscles during treatment. Superamaxial contractions refer to high-tension muscle contractions that exceed the highest amount of tension your muscles can exert and hold under normal conditions, or your maximal voluntary contractions (MVC). EMSCULPT triggers up to 20,000 supramaximal contractions in a single treatment session or the equivalent of 20,000 crunches or squats in just 30 minutes.
When exposed to these contractions, your muscle tissue is forced to adapt to these extreme conditions. This, in turn, causes the targeted muscles to start remodeling their internal structure. In other words, EMSCULPT increases your muscle volume and density. EMSCULPT is the only FDA-cleared device today designed to build muscle mass and, in turn, eliminate stubborn fat without downtime or discomfort.
Is EMSCULPT Right For You?
Because EMSCULPT treatments are nonsurgical, it does not require any anesthesia or incisions. The noninvasive nature of this body shaping procedure makes it an appropriate solution for just about anyone looking to put the finishing touch on their physique or reverse changes to their figure brought on by child-bearing or the aging process. EMSCULPT is particularly useful for those who may not have enough fat on their bodies to undergo other nonsurgical body contouring procedures, but still wish to improve their muscle tone or banish small, localized fat deposits.
While EMSCULPT is safe and noninvasive, some contraindications would prevent you from undergoing treatment. If you have any electronic or metal implants inside your body, such as a pacemaker, metal IUD or other medical device, the device will cause metal to heat and electronics to short-circuit. Women who are pregnant will also not be able to undergo EMSCULPT. My staff and I will take the time to go over your medical history and goals prior to your treatment to determine whether EMSCULPT is the right choice for you at this time.
What to Expect From the EMSCULPT Procedure
EMSCULPT treatments are quick and relatively comfortable. Most patients liken the sensations experienced during their procedure to that of an intense workout at the gym. During an EMSCULPT session, all that will be required of you is to lay down and take it easy as the device does all of the work for you. The specially designed paddles of EMSCULPT will be placed over your abdomen or gluteal muscles depending on the area you have selected to target.
We will start the treatment on a lower setting to allow you to get used to the sensation, then gradually increase the intensity according to your tolerance and desired results. The device alternates between an active phase and a resting phase to ensure your muscles get all the benefits of a simulated workout as lie there. Although the feeling of involuntary muscle contractions can feel odd at first, you will quickly adjust to the sensations as your treatment progresses. One EMSCULPT session is typically just 30 minutes in duration, making it the perfect lunch-break treatment or quick enough to fit into your already busy schedule.
What Are the Potential Side Effects of EMSCULPT?
As a gentle muscle toning treatment, EMSCULPT produces virtually zero side effects afterward. You may feel a bit sore in your treated area following your treatment sessions. Because the targeted muscles are exposed to thousands of contractions in such a short period, patients can expect to experience some muscle fatigue similar to how you feel after a vigorous workout at the gym. Any discomfort or soreness should not persist for more than a few days, and will not keep you from performing your regular day-to-day activities.
How Many EMSCULPT Treatments Are Needed?
While you will be able to feel tangible improvements to your treated area after a single EMSCULPT session, most patients will experience their most optimal results from a series of EMSCULPT appointments. In most cases, patients will require a minimum of four EMSCULPT sessions spaced two to three days apart throughout a two-week treatment process, depending on your goals. During your EMSCULPT consultation, our staff will work with you to develop an individualized treatment course that is tailored to your specific needs, so that you know what to expect to make the vision for your body a reality.
What to Expect From Your EMSCULPT Results
After completing your course of EMSCULPT treatments, you can expect to see and feel improvements to the tone of your core or the volume added to your backside. When used on the midsection, EMSCULPT can reduce small pockets of fat while firming and defining your abdominal muscles. When used on the buttocks, EMSCULPT will add a subtle lift to your rear and add additional volume for improved curves and shapeliness.
Most patients will observe visible results in as little as two weeks from their final session, though results will continue to improve gradually over time. Because the procedure works by tightening up muscles in your treated area, you will see your contour continue to improve in the weeks and months following your appointments. Some patients see positive changes for as long as six months after their last session. Noticeable benefits may include:
- Slimmer overall body frame
- Flatter, smoother midsection
- More defined abdominal muscles
- Reduced abdominal separation following pregnancy (diastasis recti)
- Tighter, firmer buttocks
- A subtly lifted rear
- A better fit for your clothing
How Long Will My Results Last?
The muscle mass and definition you gain through a series of EMSCULPT treatments are designed to be long-lasting, but may not be permanent. While some patients who undergo a complete course of EMSCULPT treatments can maintain their newly sculpted physique on their own with diet and exercise, others may wish to return periodically for maintenance sessions to keep their contours in check. While there is no set time on how long your results can last, with no maintenance of any kind, treated muscles will slowly start to diminish. Our team can help you to create an EMSCULPT treatment schedule so you can continue to see results and enjoy your best body for years to come.
